Bald-faced Hornets

Large black-and-white wasps that build the big gray football-shaped aerial nests you see in trees and on eaves.

How to identify bald-faced hornets

Bigger than most wasps — up to ¾ inch — and black with an ivory-white face and markings. Their nest is the classic large, gray, papery, enclosed 'football' hanging from a tree limb, shrub, or the side of a house.

Why it matters

Bald-faced hornets are actually a type of yellowjacket, and they are extremely protective of their aerial nest. They can sting repeatedly and will pursue a perceived threat several feet from the nest, which makes a nest near a doorway or play area genuinely dangerous.

A mature nest can house hundreds of workers by late summer. Because the nest is enclosed and often high up, removal is not a DIY job — disturbing it without the right approach and protection is how people end up in the ER.

In Kentucky

Aerial nests on eaves and rooflines are a Peak Line problem. We remove and treat them safely rather than leaving a hazard by your door.
